We hope you are as excited about spring approaching as we are! We have prepared for our spring and summer garden and wanted to share the varieties of produce being planted for you. This year we will have a variety of tomatoes- cherry mixture and slicers, an assortment of peppers- sweet and spicy, sweet spring onions, cucumbers, yellow squash- straight and crookneck, zucchini, cantaloupe, watermelon, and of course our lettuces and micro-greens. We are also experimenting with strawberries in our hydroponic growing tower, so we hope to have those to offer you as well.
Eggs and Hens:
We now have approximately 200 free range hens that call Five Oaks home. The hens freely roam throughout the pecan orchard during the day and roost safely in their solar powered mobile coop at night. Our large, brown, free-range eggs are available for purchase by the dozen weekly.
Bees update:
Honey harvest is almost here! Five Oaks has over 120 bee hives located throughout the property. Our bees not only assist with the pollination of our outdoor garden, but also aid as pollinators for our surrounding area. Our honey is considered floral, and the majority of nectar collected by our bees is sourced from palmetto and gall-berry.
Five Oaks honey is “Raw and Unfiltered”. This means it has not been processed and still contains a variety of natural enzymes and nutrients, which have a number of health benefits when consumed regularly.
Consuming Honey: Did you know?
- Local Honey can help lessen your seasonal allergies? That’s right! Local Honey is made from local pollen, and when you consume that honey, over time you become less sensitive to that pollen and ultimately have less allergy symptoms.
- Raw Honey has at least 16 antioxidants referred to as phenolic compounds. Some honey may have as many antioxidants as vegetables and fruits. Antioxidants aid in protecting your body from cell damage caused by free radicals.
- Antioxidants found in honey can help boost your immune system and fight off sickness.
These are just a few of many benefits. If you are interested in learning more, check out some of the latest research conducted by the National Institutes of Health, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles.
